AAPI Voices - Youth
"These few years, when walking on the sidewalk or waiting at bus stops, people yelled at us and spat on us. They yelled, 'Go back to China, You brought disease to US, Go back to where you came from.' It's hard to be happy when you are subjected to discrimination." ~ Xiansi Wen, 10th Grade
"I have not experienced much discrimination because of my ethnicity, but I am worried that once US-China relations begin deteriorating, we will be scapegoated and put in internment like Japanese-Americans. I get really sad when I think about that." ~ Anonymous
"It's hard to ask for help when you have to be perfect. You hear things like 'your people never complain, not like those African-Americans', and then you feel terrible about perpetuating more racism by simply existing. You almost feel as if your voice doesn't matter, and asking for help is futile anyways, because you're just burdening the system." ~ Anonymous
"My teachers tend to see me as shy at first glance, even though I am decently outgoing. Their expectations have made it even harder to actually talk to people and seek help, even though I know that judgement will be limited." ~ Anonymous
